New Jura Video – Corran Sands and Paps of Jura

When I was on Jura early May we spent quite some time at the Corran Sands. There are several ways to access this beautiful beach and I always like the stretch of beach near the airstrip the best. The views from this part of the beach to Craighouse, the Small Isles Bay and the Paps are breathtaking. You can access this part of the beach when you drive on the main road and head north from Craighouse until you reach the arched bridge. Just over the bridge you can turn right to Knockrome and after half a mile or so there is a wee track on your right that takes you to the airstrip and beach.

I’ve created this video using my Android phone to show you how peaceful it can be. The last part of the video is shot from the track of “Evan’s Walk” that leads to the Paps. The views from there include Lowlandman’s Bay and the Small Isles Bay. Enjoy!

Isle of Jura, tasting whisky and sheep shearing

I was reading the Isle of Jura newsletter today and came across a very interesting entry by Willie Cochrane, the Jura Distillery Manager: “Some of you may have got a nice Jura surprise the other night if you were sitting down to watch the TV and spotted Jura – the island, the distillery and me! – appearing in a new show starring Griff Rhys Jones, Rory McGrath and Dara O Briain. If you’ve got access to the iPlayer you can find the whole thing here and if not, here’s a little clip that gives you a taste of what you missed – If you’ve never been to Jura, it shows off the island pretty well.”

The “pretty well” proves to be an understatement, the video is great and very much worth watching and as a bonus you get a free lesson in sheep shearing! Enjoy and on behalf of me a Happy New Year!

Grahame Petit Preparing Jura Venison

In May I wrote about the opening of the Antlers restaurant on Jura. The restaurant, located in Craighouse next to the Jura Distillery, is run by Grahame Petit and Steve Prust. Much to my surprise Grahame’s daughter Becky added a wee comment to that blog post and she wrote that she liked the food because it is her dads business. Over the last years I have met Grahame a couple of times and it was great to see him featuring in a video where you can watch him cooking a Jura Venison with….. right, Superstition Jura whisky. The video was made by Andrew Dubber and I think he did a great job. Enjoy!

Andrew Dubber posted quite a few Jura Videos on Vimeo, a Youtube lookalike with a somewhat higher quality video. Apparently Andrew visited the Isle of Jura in spring and created some very interesting videos of the island. In the next weeks I will try and post more videos from Andrew but I will start with the tour at the Jura Distillery by Willie Cochrane.

The interesting bit about Andrew’s videos is the fact that people play the main part and not so much the other interesting features of Jura. In this respect it’s good to point out another video with an interview with a guy called Jamie about life on Jura which isn’t all antlers and whisky. In this interesting interview Jamie talks about the big wide world, and Jura!

Scottish Ultra Marathon in Ultra Bad Weather

Carl Reavey, editor of the Ileach Newspaper, went out last Monday to capture day two of the Scottish Ultra Marathon that started on Islay on May 3rd and lasts for six days. The Ultra Marathon has two stages on Islay and four on Jura. On Sunday the weather was pretty good but it broke down on Sunday evening and it has been raining almost non-stop since. The forecast doesn’t look too good either so it will be a very tough challenge for all involved. In the video below you can see footage from day two and it has a lot of water in it but also some smiling faces too!

I have uploaded a video today to youtube from the Isle of Jura which I took in 2005. For some reason it took me over three years to actually make it available for Youtube. You can see a few pictures combined with video footage, sometimes from the driving car. I have tried to find matching music and it turned out to be something Celtic. Enjoy!
