In May I wrote about the opening of the Antlers restaurant on Jura. The restaurant, located in Craighouse next to the Jura Distillery, is run by Grahame Petit and Steve Prust. Much to my surprise Grahame’s daughter Becky added a wee comment to that blog post and she wrote that she liked the food because it is her dads business. Over the last years I have met Grahame a couple of times and it was great to see him featuring in a video where you can watch him cooking a Jura Venison with….. right, Superstition Jura whisky. The video was made by Andrew Dubber and I think he did a great job. Enjoy!

New Community Facility for the Isle of Jura

Easter weekend saw the opening of the newly renovated Antlers Bistro – Restaurant, Heritage and Craft Centre in Craighouse on Jura. The building was purchased in 2002 on behalf of the community of Jura by the Jura Development Trust using grant funding from the Scottish Land Fund and work has been on going since that time to secure funds for renovation of the building into a 24 cover Bistro – Restaurant with a heritage display and craft sales.

In the picture: Alex Dunnachie, Angus Paton, John Potts, Elaine Campbell (Trust Administrator), Carol McKay, Peter Wotherspoon

Both locals and visitors to the island turned out for the official opening on Saturday 11th April which was hosted by the JDT and catered for by the facility’s new tenants – Small Isles Catering – partners Grahame Pettit and Stephen Prust. The sun shone brightly as a gathering of around 120 attended the opening. JDT Chairman John Potts welcomed everyone and acknowledged support of the main project funders – The Big Lottery, HIE Argyll and the Islands, LEADER and the Moffat Charitable Trust along with a number of smaller groups and organisations who contributed to the project. He went on to acclaim the work of the project Design Team – G.McLeod Q.S, Sirus Jafari Architect, Stewart Consulting Planning Co-ordinators and McEachern Bros construction of Isle of Islay.

Reverend George Campbell delivered a witty and relevant dialogue wishing success to the project and its new tenants and the ceremonious unlocking of the door was undertaken by Mr Jack Paton, long time Jura resident and neighbour to the facility, allowing all their first glimpse of the new facility which will be open daily from 8.30am favouring a range of local produce and catering for all needs.

Easter weekend also saw the island’s 16 new moorings and 30m of landing pontoons going back in the water for the 2009 sailing season. In addition, the Jura – Tayvallich passenger ferry service resumed its summer service. All 3 projects have been developed and delivered by the JDT after many years of hard work both on and off the island.

Administrator of the JDT Elaine Campbell said ‘This is a very exciting time for Jura. Not only do the 3 projects benefit each other greatly but they provide an increase in employment and enterprise opportunities to the island. The new Antlers is already proving to be a popular place to visit both with locals and visitors and we look forward to a busy 2009’.

Grahame Petit, one of the owners of the Small Isles Catering Van together with Steve Prust, sent me an email a while back with some great news for Jura. If all goes as planned a new restaurant will open on Jura in May 2009. Grahame said: “Steve Prust and I are opening with the help of the “Jura development Trust” The Antlers Bistro – Restaurant In Craighouse Jura and our hope is that it will be ready and open next April”. The name for the new restaurant is well chosen and matches the image people have of Jura. The owners have started a website as well which can be found at www.theantlers.co.uk. The restaurant will be opened all year round and is a welcome addition for locals and visitors alike. To give you an idea what they offer, you can find an overview below:

Bistro open daily from 8am until 5pm (All day breakfasts, home baking, and a menu with a difference)

Restaurant open evenings 6.30 – Late (bookings only) (a Two and three course high quality menu using local produce will be available)

Full take away service, and packed lunches

Party nights (book us for birthdays & anniversaries etc)

Theme nights (Indian, Chinese, Mexican etc)

Traditional Sunday lunches (bookings only)

Music nights (with local musicians)

Children’s birthday parties (we may live to regret this one)

Tea, cake and coffee mornings

Local Arts and crafts sold on premises

Local jura interpretation centreFor reservations call 01496 820 142 or send an email to reservations@theantlers.co.uk

I think this looks very impressive already and I can recommend a visit as soon as they are opened. Congratulations Steve and Grahame and lots of success with your new venture!
